Richard Lee Likes to Lead!

Richard Lee lead wire-to-wire as he defended his crown as the Seattle Amateur Champion shooting a 54 hole total of 6-under par. That makes two years in a row that Lee has slept on the lead for every round. He continues his incredible summer punctuating his win in the State Amateur in June with the Seattle Amateur title. Richard Lee, Bellevue Community College golfer and University of Washington recruit for 2009, was pushed hard all day by his fellow competitors and his putter.

He started his round off by missing five putts under 12 feet and found himself looking at a 5 footer for a bogey on hole six where he knocked it in to give him a little momentum despite making a bogey.

Playing in the group ahead of Lee was Thomas Jun and he was in the middle of a 4 hole birdie stretch. Then on hole 12, a 200 yard par 3, he hit his tee shot to 5 feet but missed the putt that would have put him two shots ahead of Richard Lee. Moments after Jun missed his bid for a 5th birdie in a row, Richard Lee birdied #11 to pull even with Jun. Thomas struggled coming in by making a few bogeys but still finished in 4th place.

Lee was not safe despite Jun falling back to 2-under par because Kevin Penner was in the middle of a three hole birdie binge on #14, #15 and #16 to not only catch Richard Lee but pass him. Now Lee found himself one shot behind on hole #17 where he promptly made birdie to pull even with Penner standing on the 18th tee. Both players hit good drives on #18 but Penner pushed his iron shot to the right and sadly he made double bogey. From there Penner, 2008 Seattle Amateur Runner Up, could only watch as Lee made a par to win by 2 shots.

Jonathan Keane played solid all day but could not seem to get hot enough to catch the leaders but gave everything he had while birding holes #16 and #17 just to give himself a glimmer of hope on 18. He finished alone in 3rd place.

It gives Premier Golf, the City of Seattle and all the staff at Jackson, Jefferson and West Seattle great pleasure to host this elite event and we hope you agree that this is one of the premier events in amateur golf.
